A multi-vehicle accident that occurred on New Jersey’s Interstate 78 caused the death of one man and injured five other individuals on Dec. 22. According to a state police representative, the cause of the accident is being investigated as of the time of this report.
The crash occurred around 7:06 p.m. when a 54-year-old Virginia resident, traveling west on the interstate in a Honda Odyssey with three minors in the car, rear-ended an Audi S5. The Audi, driven by a 36-year-old Hoboken resident, left the highway and struck a tree. After striking the Audi, the Honda crashed into a Nissan driven by a 61-year-old Bridgewater resident causing it to hit the guardrail. After hitting the Nissan, the Honda headed toward the shoulder of the road and subsequently struck a tree.
The Honda’s driver was declared dead at the accident site. The drivers of both the Audi and the Nissan were taken to two local hospitals with what were described as injuries that were not life threatening. The three minors who were passengers in the Honda were transported to a hospital in Somerset.
While in this case the cause of the car accident is as yet unknown, rear-end collisions may be due to speeding, distracted driving or poor roadway conditions. Not being alert to changes in traffic or maintaining a safe distance may be considered negligent behavior and cause injury to other motorists. The driver or his or her estate may be held liable for the expenses involved in medical care and lost wages.
